Here is the latest news involving Seth Thomas Collection members and their horses ...
Item: Here is a letter Dale Lutke received from a woman named Erica Brown, who had a special connection with the incomparable Seth Thomas: "Let me tell you a little bit about my amazing Grandparents! Their names are David and Phyllis Cox. Unfortunately, Grandpa died at the age of 91, in 2004. Grandma is still kickin, but she is in an assisted living facility at the age of 92. In case you didn't recognize their names, I will tell you about them. They were very much into the pony business when they were young. They had a herd of over 200 ponies back in the day. They showed and so did their three boys. The whole family was raised on ponies, as was I. On May 15,1964 (I know this to be accurate because I have Grandma and Granpa's very accurate account book) they purchased Seth Thomas from the Seekamps. Seth died before I was born, but I know him well through the many pictures and stories. Soon, Grandpa's herd was full of Seth's offspring. Their very large house was soon filling up with trophies and ribbons and blankets and many other awards. Seth had his own very large stall with his name on it. Grandpa would bring him in at night or when folks came to see him. Soon, there were people coming from all over the world to see the Famous Incomparable Seth Thomas. So, Grandpa taught him to stand on his hind legs. (I have that picture. One of my favorites.) Seth died in 1972. I believe he was the only pony buried on Gran-Vue Pony Farm. When I was growing up, he gave me one of Seth's daughters, Ballerina. I kept her until she died. He had 3 of his son's that he would breed with certain mares throughout the years to keep his herd up. Skipper, we all called him Skippy, would race you down the driveway. What fun for us kids! Grandpa had a sleigh and a huge wagon and every year Seth's children would be hitched to both and Dad would haul Santa and Grandpa and my cousin and I would haul Mrs. Claus in the town parade. Those memories are so special. Unfortunately, when Grandpa got older, he decided to sell everything. No one could talk him out of it. It was the largest most talked about pony sale around. He asked me to help, and I selfishly told him I couldn't be a part of it. So I sat in their north facing bedroom( it faces the barn) and cried as I watched each pony that I loved so dearly go. He sold the wagons, the sulkies that he raced( that I drove), tack, all of it. My husband came and told me when Cock Robin came up to bid, he was the last to go and the most special to me. I walked out there talked to the lady and went and got him out of Seth's stall and loaded the last of Seth into a trailer. I now live at Gran-Vue Pony Farm and Grandma often tells me that she wishes they wouldn't have sold the ponies. Me too, but you can't go back. I go in the barn and look at Seth's stall and wish I could go back just for a day. He was a great pony. He had the most wonderful Christian owners in the world. So, now you have "the rest of the story" as Paul Harvey would say.
